Minecraft cottage ideas

A cottage is one of the best things to build in Minecraft. It is small enough to finish in an afternoon, and cozy enough that you will want to live in it. Below are three cottage houses in Minecraft, from a tiny one-room starter to a big woodland cottage with a tower, a greenhouse and a barn.

Each build has pictures, a layer-by-layer blueprint and a list of every block you need. If you play in GenieCrafter, you can also type the wish in chat and the genie builds its own version in your family's private world. Pick one, gather your blocks and start with the floor.

Tips for building your own

Mix two or three wall blocks

A wall made of one block looks flat. Use stone or cobblestone for the bottom row, planks for the walls and dark logs for the corners. Dark corner posts make any cottage look like a real timber frame.

Make the roof bigger than the walls

Let the roof stick out one block past the walls on every side. This shadow edge is what makes a cottage look cozy. Build the slope one block at a time, and fill in the triangle at each end so there are no holes.

Use hay blocks for thatch

Hay blocks are the easiest way to make a thatched roof, and you can get them in survival by growing wheat. For a mossy roof, use moss blocks. Add a ridge row of dark planks along the top so the roof looks finished.

Add small details outside

A cottage is more than the house. Add a fence, a path of dirt path blocks, flower beds, a well and a tree. Small things like window boxes, shutters made from trapdoors and a lantern by the door make it feel lived in.

Light it so mobs stay away

Monsters spawn in dark spots, so put torches or lanterns in every room, on the porch and along the path. Lanterns hung from a fence post look nicer than plain torches. Glowstone hidden in the ceiling works well too.

Plan the inside before the roof

Place the bed, crafting table, furnace and bookshelves while the roof is still open, so you can reach everything. A red carpet and a few bookshelves turn an empty box into a room.

Questions

How do you build a cottage in Minecraft?

Start with a square or rectangle floor of cobblestone. Build the walls from planks with log corners, then add a roof that slopes down and sticks out past the walls. Finish with a door, windows, a chimney and a garden. The Little Cobble Cottage above is a good first try.

What blocks are best for a Minecraft cottage house?

Oak or birch planks for walls, cobblestone or stone bricks for the base, and dark oak logs for corners. For the roof, try hay blocks for thatch, red concrete for a bright roof or moss blocks for a mossy one. Glass panes work well for windows.

How do you make a cozy cottage in Minecraft?

Keep it small, use warm wood colors and add lots of light and plants. Lanterns, carpets, bookshelves, a fireplace and flower boxes all help. A fence and a small garden around the house make it feel like a home.
