Minecraft castle ideas

A castle is one of the first things most players want to build, and it is easy to see why. Towers, walls, a gate and a flag on top. This page has three castle ideas for Minecraft, from a small fort you can finish in an afternoon to a big castle with a moat. Every build comes with pictures, a layer-by-layer blueprint and a list of the blocks you need.

Each castle looks different, so you can pick the one that fits your world. If you play in GenieCrafter, you can also type the wish in chat and the genie builds its own version in your family's private world. Otherwise, follow the blueprint and build it by hand.

Tips for building your own

Start with the footprint

Mark the outline of your walls on the ground with any block before you build up. Count the corners and make every wall the same height. A castle that starts square usually ends up looking good.

Mix your stone blocks

Plain stone bricks look flat. Add some mossy stone bricks near the bottom and a few cracked or cobblestone blocks higher up, so the walls look old. Deepslate bricks work well for rings and trim around the tops of towers.

Round towers make it a castle

Square towers are fine, but round ones say castle at first glance. Make a circle on the ground, build the wall up in a ring, then put a cone roof on top in a bright colour. Make the tower taller than the wall next to it so it stands out.

Add battlements

Put a row of fence or cobblestone wall blocks along the top of the wall. Or leave a gap between every second block for the classic notched edge. It takes a few minutes and changes the whole look.

Light it so mobs stay away

Mobs spawn in the dark, even inside your courtyard. Hang lanterns along the wall walk, by the gate and inside every tower. Light level 7 or less lets mobs spawn, so check dark corners.

Use a moat and a bridge

A ring of water around the walls makes any castle feel bigger. Dig it two blocks wide, fill it with water and cross it with a plank bridge at the gate. In survival, a moat also keeps most mobs from walking up to your door.

Questions

How do you build a castle in Minecraft?

Start with a flat area and mark the wall outline. Build four walls, add a round or square tower at each corner, then cut a gate in the front wall. Finish with a keep in the middle, roofs on the towers, flags and lanterns. The three blueprints on this page show each step layer by layer.

What blocks are best for a Minecraft castle?

Stone bricks are the classic choice because they are easy to get and look like castle walls. Mix in mossy stone bricks, cobblestone and deepslate bricks for variety. Use wood for doors, bridges and details, and colored concrete or wool for roofs and banners.

What are good Minecraft castle ideas for beginners?

Start small. A square courtyard with four corner towers and a gate, like the Little Stone Castle above, uses only a few types of block. Once that feels easy, add a keep, a moat or a garden.
