Minecraft ferris wheel ideas

A ferris wheel is one of the best things to build in Minecraft. It is tall, it is colourful, and it looks great at night with the lights on. The hard part is the circle. Blocks are square, so a round wheel needs a little planning.

Below are three ferris wheel builds you can copy: a small one for an afternoon, a tall golden fair wheel, and a giant park wheel with sixteen gondolas. Each one has a blueprint you can read layer by layer and a list of blocks. If you play GenieCrafter, you can also type the wish in chat and the genie builds its own version in your family's private world.

Tips for building your own

Draw the circle on paper first

Sketch the wheel on graph paper, one square per block. Count the blocks along each quarter of the circle and repeat them. A radius of 7 to 10 blocks gives a round wheel without too much work.

Build the wheel flat in the air plane you want

A ferris wheel stands up, so it is built in a vertical plane, not on the ground. Place the hub first, then count out from it. Use scaffolding blocks like dirt and remove them when you finish.

Keep the rim two blocks thick

A rim that is one block wide breaks into little diagonal pieces. Making it two blocks thick keeps every block touching the next, so the circle looks solid and clean.

Use bright colours for the gondolas

White for the rim and frame, and a rainbow of concrete for the gondolas. Hang each one straight down from the rim, not tilted. Glass in the middle makes them look like cabins.

Make a strong A-frame base

Two thick legs that slope from the hub to the ground hold the wheel up and look right. Dark oak is good because it contrasts with a white wheel.

Light it up for night and mobs

Place sea lanterns around the rim and a glowstone at the hub. The wheel looks amazing after dark, and bright lights around the base keep monsters from spawning on your plaza.

Questions

How do you build a ferris wheel in Minecraft?

Place a hub block, then build a circle of blocks around it in a vertical plane. Add spokes from the hub to the rim, hang coloured gondolas from the rim, and finish with two legs to the ground. The builds above show three sizes you can copy.

How do you make a working ferris wheel in Minecraft?

In plain Minecraft a wheel that really turns needs redstone and piston tricks, or a mod or command blocks. The wheels on this page are display builds that look like the real thing but do not spin.

How big should a Minecraft ferris wheel be?

A radius of 7 blocks makes a small wheel about 15 blocks tall. A radius of 10 makes a medium wheel, and a radius of 19 makes a giant one nearly 40 blocks tall. Bigger wheels look better but take much more time.
